Just for comparison, take a look at the numbers for my 2000 Excursion V10. I pulled the exact same trailer two summers ago on a major family trip up and over the U.P.
If I would have used the new Super Duty on that trip, it would have easily averaged at least 11 mpg using 351 gallons for a total fuel cost of $1,368.54. That's a $760 savings alone and the towing experience would have been much better. 11 mpg is probably conservative also because the trip is mostly flat lands at lower elevations than I drive here in the Rocky Mountains.
I'm starting to plan a trip up the Alaskan Highway to Anchorage in 2012. Drive up with friends and the trailer and then Ferry back to Seattle and home.

Some do, but they are pricey. I was quoted for $4000 for 5 passengers and 40" of truck and trailer. Eeek. I'm checking on some other options as I wouldn't care about accommodations or amenities. I just want to drive on and be able to stay in the trailer. Don't know if you can even do that.

Geez Epic...are we using the same play book. Debbie and I are planning an Alaska trip in 2012 as well. I looked into the ferries. I did not find any that allow you to stay in the rig. We are planning on a late May departure heading to a Canadian border crossing in South Dakota. From there we will head for the Alaskan Hwy. I really want to drive the Dalton Hwy up to Prudhoe Bay. We are planning a return down the Cassiar Hwy in Mid August to see the famous Cassiar bears at Hyder, Alaska. Small world...

I don't remember the Ferries being that expensive. But we usually just went from Seward to Cordova or Valdez to Cordova. And usually in a 26' motor home
The problem with the ferries, that it's only tall enough right down the center. So they are very limited for any tall vehicles. So it's really important to get reservation. Because if your are sitting on the dock hoping for space. It probabaly wont happen. This makes it hard to be spontaneous. i.e if he fishing is good and you want to stay and extra day or the fishing is bad and you want to leave a day early.

It's a toy hauler when fully loaded is just under 11K. It weighed less when I towed it around the mid-west as I didn't have any machines in it and very little water. Would have been about 2.5K lbs lighter then. It was all the Excursion could handle. The Super Duty says peeshaw when I load it up now.
