I am about to pull the trigger on new gears. Asking advice on what to order. I was thinking 4.30, but maybe 4.56? I have a 2001 CCSB 4x4 auto, with 275/70/18s, but may go a tad bigger tire in the future. I also have a 5-star tune, and plan headers in the future as well. I pull quite abit, and Im looking at new 5th wheels. Will stay in the 12k-15k range. What would you guys do? My main concern with 4.56 is if I can't pull in OD i will be too high RPM in drive at 65mph.
For the weight you pull at 65mph I'd say 4.56s would be better than 4.30s and it will give you a little more room for a slightly large tire. Depending how much bigger you want to go with the tires 4.56 may not be enough gear.
Hi Mike, How are things going? Good here in Kansas.
My last truck (99 V10 4" lift and 315s with Banks powerpack and 4.56) seemed to be great. But I wont lift this one, well maybe 2" in front and F-350 blocks out back, due to pulling a 5er, as well as a gooseneck. So you think 4.56 would be better than 4.30? it wont run too high RPMs? As for bigger tires, maybe just a tad taller and a tad wider, as I like my '04 KR 18's!
A whole different question, but whats the best bang for the buck headers? and exhaust? will most likely nix the CAT as well.
I put the 4.30's on my 04 and tow a 13K 5th wheel. If I had it to do over I would have gone with the 4.56's. After switching to the 4.30's from the 3.73's the rpms went up a little but not worth the worry maybe they went up 250 thru all gears. The gas milage decrease wasn't bad. I now get 14.58 mpg on the highway and 10.25 in the city not towing. Towing is about 9.48 mpg. GO with the 4.56 or even the 4.88 if you tow in the mountains or up long grades.
