Cam choice?

hey guys,
im new to the whole workin on engines deal. im lookin for a decent cam.

COMP Cams K33-207-3 - COMP Cams Dual Energy Cam and Lifter Kits - Overview - SummitRacing.com

This is the one i was lookin at on summit. what do you guys think?

engine is 390 bored .030 over. edelbrock intake and carb and stock exhaust manifolds. all stock pretty much.

im lookin to build it a little bit. pretty mild : edelbrock performer RPM intake, holley 650cfm carb and some headers. then the cam. just havent decided which one to go with because i really havent worked on it enough to know better.

let me know what you guys think and what other things you think i should do. i would like to make between 350-400 hp or somewhere close. im only lookin for some power to turn my new bigger tires

Sounds like a plan - EXEPT _ you seen to be cramming a lot into the engine but making it squeeeze out the stock exhaust - NOT good for HP gains. A good set of headers will gain a few HP on their own alone. > fuel & air going in is great but it needs to get out freely AS WELL to do any good< MORE RESEARCH needed.

I'm sort of clueless when it comes to cams, but that cam, while giving great driveability, may not get you all that close to 400 Hp. It should in theory, but theory includes a perfect fuel mixture and perfect ignition timing......and as above.....free flowing headers.

It does look like a good choice for a truck though....nice wide rpm range. And that's the thing. Go too far up in duration looking for big Hp gains, and you may lose some low end response.

What I did, is find a cam I liked the looks of, and then called the cam manufacture tech rep.....on the phone....no e-mails.......and asked them about it. I did this with a Crane cam, and the guy asked me all kinds of questions about my engine...bore, stroke, CR, etc., and then put it all through some software and gave me Hp figures over the phone. He also was able to forecast if I'd have a smooth or lumpy idle, etc. You should be able to find the number on Comp's website.

you guys think i should port and polish the head too? i have no idea the pros and cons of port and polishing.

whether i get 400hp or not doesnt bother me i just want a bigger cam and more hp than stock. i like that cam kit because it has new lifter, valvetrain and timing chain/ gears that is double roller.

ok ill look up the number and give them a call.

thanks guys

Im looking for the same info, let us know what you come up with. I have almost the same question but my motor is around 10:1 factory 4v out of a mustang i think with a ebrock carb and headers. I was looking at the xtreme energy xe275h. Im going to be wheeling dirt, sand and some crawling but if the power starts at 2k thats fine with me, my trans is a np435 so first gear at 2k is less than 5 mph.

66crawler - UNDERSTOOD - I know a few and have heard-of / read about other "offroaders" that have ( or go to) the NP 435 because of that DEEP 1st gear coupled with the 205 transfer case. Gives a person a lot of 'flex' as far as gear selection goes. ( Creeping speed at mid RPM = brute force - hope the tires have 'nuff grip to climb that tree )

I wish I had a 205 lol, right now in stuck with a d21 which is just an in and out, no gear reduction. The bfg muds I got on should be enough grip but if not I got 450lbs of torque under the skinny pedal lol.
