I'm new to driving a Ranger as of this spring. Dad bought a used 1992 4x2 with 2.3L and a five-speed stickshift with 70,000 miles. He didn't like it, so I am driving it to save on gas. I've driven it about 20,000 this year, and the problem is that it seems to be getting harder to get the stick shift into gear when stopped, especially first thing in the morning. After driving for awhile it's not so bad. There is no grinding of gears, just takes pressure to pop the stick into first, or reverse. Is this a sign that the clutch needs replaced? All I see in the manual is that it has a self-adjusting hydraulic clutch, and the fluid level looks fine.
I have a 1995 Ranger 4X4 with a 5 speed and have had the same problem for a couple years. I had the transmission rebuilt, new clutch, pressure plate and slave. Still didn't shift worth a darn. I put in a new master cylinder and bench bled it. Same problem. ONE BIG problem is the master cylinder is pointing down at a 30 or 35 degree angle, POOR DESIGN! I found a new clutch that was NOT a self adjusting clutch and had it put in with a new master and slave cylinders. It still is no better! It took the garage 2 days to get it bled. They called Ford to have them bleed it and they said they would NOT work on it. They said the last one they worked on it was in their shop for 10 days before they got it working. I guess this is one of Ford's better ideas! This has been bled so many time by so many people, I lost track!!!
I wonder if any of these ever came out with a different bell housing and mechanical linkage?

Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission? Are there signs of leakage toward the rear of the transmission?
There are three rubber plugs at the ends of the shift rails at the top of the tranny. In time, they dry out and leak. They may need to be replaced. With the relatively low miles on your truck, it must have sat idle for long periods of time which adds to the drying out of the plugs.
Let us know what you find. You have a truck with lots of good miles left in it.
