Hey all,
Need some advice/info. Im new to towing and just bought a 5th wheel avalanche by keystone rv. About 12k when we travel. I have a 2010 250 srw 6.4. Did about 500 miles this weekend. My truck is spartaned tuned and I ran the 210 tow performance tune. My big question is about boost. Most of the trip I was making 18-22 lbs of boost crusing about 65. Is this normal. Again im new to towing so im not sure what my truck should be doing. My temps were fine never really got over 1000 degrees and all other temps seemed normal. How hard can I push it? I took it pretty easy and ever allowed my truck to do over 30lbs when I was accelerating.
Any help or advice would be great. Thanks
Sean
I've towed a lot but never with a tuner so I don't know what impact that has. In my experience towing is just like driving, the boost moves around in conjuction with the amount of power you need. I drive at 60 on cruise which puts me at 2000 RPM. As the road grade changes the boost goes up and down to maintain the RPM and speed. 18 to 20 doesn't seem too high to me but I would be suprised if it stayed there for any length of time. Now, I'm not talking about steep climbs or desents but just a mostly level terrain. Crossing some of those mountains out west last month I think my boost was at 60 lbs. LOL. At least it seemed that way.
I have the dasdaq that I got from spartan. They have preset limits in place for all the temps. All my temps seemed to be not much hotter then when I am unloaded. Just wasnt sure if the sustained boost was a problem.
Thanks for the help again.
Year ago or so Mr. Senix and I both kinda started telling lots of folks to run the engine, work it hard, let it do its thing. It actually seems to give better results when it is worked hard.
Your alarms are in place with your DashDaq. You won't burn up the turbo. Just feed her fuel and let it rip. If you do have strange sounds, vibrations, or any driveablility problems, there is a strong knowledge base here so you do have support. Also, I am led to believe that Spartan is good with their support. Couple of their people do visit these forums, which is worthy of respect IMHO.
Thanks for all the replies. Ill be taking the family our thit weekend with the 5th wheel and will do as you all say and run her hard. Now that I dont have to worry about having my turbo blow up Ill feel much better about it. By the way have a 5th wheel camper is a blast for those of you considering it.

How do you like your Outback? I picked up a 2007 23krs toy hauler earlier this year. I felt as if my '05 Dodge Ram was struggling a little with the trailer fully loaded so I decided to upgrade to a diesel. Trailer only weighs about 8000 lbs fully loaded, F250 has no problems with it. Heck, I can even set the cruise while I'm towing and it never shifts. I love the Outback though, we've gotten tons of use out of it this summer.
