Got this info from another site. Thought it might be interesting to post. A 99 F-150, 4x4, auto with 80000 miles on the truck. Truck is driven 50% on freeway and during this oil change has been subjected to below zero temps. Oil is Valvoline Durablend 5w-30 and valvoline oil filter and air filter is used. Mileage on oil is 4038 miles. Analysis as follows:
Copper 2
Iron 16
Chromium 1
Lead 0
Aluminum 3
Silicone 4
Moly 3
Sodium 2
Magnesium 12
Zinc 908
Phos. 721
Calcium 1980
TBN 8.0
VIS @ 100C 10.5
The only elevated part is the iron which would be expected because of the cold startup in subzero weather. Note low level of silicone- now that's a good air filter. Considering that the 4.6 has not had any of the internals changed to actually warrant a 5w-20 oil, it looks like a good grade of 5w-30 would do nicely for folks that live in heat prone areas. Comments?
This is the route I am taking with my '02 Ranger. 5W30 has been recommended for these motors for years with good results so that is what I am using in the Chevron Supreme. I will send in a sample at around 20K once the engine is completely broke in.
