I'm swaping my old, worn out, almost dead, 73 390 (that only had 205hp well it rolled off the factory floor), with a 66 390 (that had 275hp when it rolled out lol)! This will be my first swap, and I'll be by myself, so I'm would really appreciate any tips, tricks, ideas you can offer!
Also, I'm thinking it'd be cool to swap out my 3spd auto to a 4spd stick, but I've been told that it might be above my ability to do this by myself.
Take your time and you can do it. It is better to have an extra set of hands from time to time to help line things up when you set it back in, but I have done it alone. Don't force anything and be careful and it will be fine.
And I would remind ya if you deicde to swap trans from Auto to manual; Two others factors can come into play; like starter differences; and possible drive shaft's. Another hiccup can be neutral saftey switch. Don't want to scare ya; but these thing fall into the "ahh-crap" mode sometimes!
Another thing to keep in mind is that 66 and 70's engine horsepower was rated differently, the 66 will most likely have a little more juice. I dobbt it will be a lot though.
Net horsepower was rated with only the basic drivin accesories on the front of the motor, such as the alternator and water pump...Then Gross horsepower came out that showed the real horsepower rating, which was alternator, water pump, fan, A/C Compressor, Power Steering pump, which all drastically changed the horsepower ratings of the motors...hope this helps!
Im guessing gross is what the motor puts out at the flywheel while net is what gets to the ground after the driveline. I have heard the figure of roughly a 25% loss.
BD - ANOTHER way to look at it >> How much GROSS WEIGHT is the turkey when it's put on the table ? What is the NET WEIGHT after everybody is finished ? Just a thought.........
I got a 74 F250 Crew with 360 & T18 4 speed manual. An we had to take the trans out to get it rebuilt we had to use a trans jack & floor jack at the same time to get them both level to slide the trans back to get it in an out an on the trans we pulled it up through the floor were the shifter is instead of raising the truck up higher to get it out from under it. We just had the truck on a set of ramps doing it. The Haynes book will tell you how to do this we used it a lot on this truck. Just take your time an take it easy an don't get in a hurry with it an ask questions if you don't know.
Big_Dom, Do you have a very large engine crane? Your gonna have a lot of weight in the air. Don't believe the numbers on some of these lower end imported cranes. Don't lift any higher than you absolutely have to!!! Dont get under or between during the lift and if something gets away just get clear and let it go. You can always regroup and get back on it.
