Alright, Ill get the cam and springs, is it a simple install? I was told it was very easy... The headers sound like a good way to go and non expencive.... they arent cheap"o"'s are they? I will go for the natural finish, im not going to paint it tho, I found some spray cleaner that etches aluminum, I have ised it on a honda engine befor and it cleans it to a sparkly shine, gets off all sorts of burnt on grease and oil and also doesent dammage the gaskets. So, I think the first 3 things I am going to do to my truck are 1.Carb 2.Intake 3.Headers 4.Exhaust 5.Cam and springs. Will this thing be fun to drive after that? Oh also what gears should I get for my rear? I have a 3 speed manual.?
sounds like you have it all set. If you're going to rebuild the motor, the valvesprings and the cam will be relatively easy to do, and it's nothing that you wouldn't have to do anyway. With the mods you described, the truck will be very fun to drive, have lots of torque and a good bit of power, and it will be as reliable and probably even get better fuel milage than your stock setup would. That cam doesn't need any more gear than you have stock, even 2.75's will run very well with that engine. It would be a heck of a lot more fun to have more though, but it will limit your highway speed. I wouldn't go any higher than 3.55's if you're gonna keep the 3 speed, that should keep you cruising happily at 65 MPH on the freeway. I go 75 at 2500 RPM with my 2.75's, so it really depends on what kind of driving you want to do. TK
I, along with a few other people have had great sucess with holley remaned carbs.
$200 from champion, bolt them on, and 5 minutes of tweaking, and you are set.. They get great milage, and run great. My truck starts at -30 below, and runs great when its hot out..
You're going to find a few of those opinions, but the Edelbrock is a much simpler device, which requires less calibration. I had a Holley 600 vacuum secondaries, electric choke, and on the same engine an ou-of-the-box Edelbrock of the same rating got 2 MPG better than the Holley. I know how to tune both of them, but just to check, I had an ASE certified master mechanic get his hands on the Holley as well, and even after his work, it performed no better. Don't get me wrong, 10% of the time, it ran so good that nothing could touch it, but it was very inconsistent, and sometimes it wouldn't run at all. For a daily driver, you can't beat the simplicity of the Edelbrock/Carter/Weber design. The Holley design is much more customizable, but in general is more maintenance-intensive. If you're really in love with the Holley design, spend a little bit more and go with a Road Demon. Those are basically Holley carbs with all kinks worked out, and supremely customizable, and are basically the most powerful carbs you can get with the same flowrating. I rebuilt one in my room yesterday for a friend, and I'll be the first to tell you what an awesome device that thing is, but I'd still hesitate to replace my tried-and-true Edelbrock.
I put on a Holly Street avenger 670cfm carb on with a edlbrock intake. and added some headmen headders with duals out the back. Its a great set up IMO. Heres a link to some pics of my setup:"
Sweet Setup u got there.... I am not starting a edl-hly war am I ?
I am planing on buying the Edelbrock 600cfm Carb, I know more about them than any other carb from experience with other peoples cars/trucks. And all of the Mec's I have talked to say Edl is the way to go with a 302 (because they already get good gas mileage with the 3 speed manual) I am now stuck on what kind of headers to buy? I like the ones (alpine) has on his truck, sweet setup man, now all u need to do is pop out the engine and get some paint and some chrome valve covers.

ya Im gonna get some valve covers hopefully this summer but as for painting the engine i would love to but dont have any place I could do it. I have to do all my work in my drive way cuase I dont have a gargae
??? Do you have a engine puller If you do than you could just pull the engine and degrease it, (if you have a spray gun) go to parker paint and get some paint, and go to any home store and buy a small cover of some sort.... I have a Boat cover, its a PVC frame and White tarp with sides, works great because I can take a karoseen (spell check) heater and put it in there on full for about 20 minuites and its warm. but just make a cover to keep out the bugs and wind, tape it off, spray it and keep it warm over night, after that put it back in and there ya go,,,,, unless you really want it to look good, than I would recomend u do it in a controled environment, mine turnd out great the way I did it, no runs or anything, actualy I was proud of myself when It was finished! Or if you want a quick fix so its more pleaseing to the eyes, go buy 2 rattle cans of 2000F engine paint and sand them down and spray them outside and bring them in to dry.
