fuel gage

First of, new to the forum, but has already saved me alot of time as I got the old motorcraft 2150 tuned finally. But something strange happened. The last time the truck was driven (84 F250 4x4) all the gages worked fine, including the front and rear tank. Now I get nothing on either one. Needle sits below E, and I know both tanks are full. All the other gages work fine. Wouldn't think that both sending units went at the same time. I am not that good w/electrical work so any ideas or advice on where to start would be appreciated.

TIA
Jim

Take the sending unit wire off the front fuel tank. With the switch to the front tank, and the key in run, engine off, ground the sending unit wire. The gauge will read full scale empty or full. Then take the wire off ground and let it hang in the air. The gauge should go full scale the opposite way. If it passes this test, the gauge, wiring, selector switch and wiring back to the tank are good, and there is something wrong with the sending unit.

Fuel Sending Unit

Dave, I have a '97 diesel F250 and the front fuel tank sending unit quit. I had it replaced at Ford and now (two years later) it has quit again. Why would that happen? The rear tank has never been a problem.

The sending units in these trucks are cheap junk. The resistor on the sending unit is "painted on" material and it wears out. Yours should have lasted longer though, so if I were you I would do the above test to make sure where the problem is.
