when starting from a stop, i go 10 - 20 feet and it feels like a stuttering/ shaking from the rear end. Almost like the brakes are hanging up and then release. My dad was with me once and said my tranny was going out. I naturally did not believe him, but now am starting to wonder. What made me question it was, recently after leaving work, i would hear a clunk. Looked if i ran something over and nothing. So while at the stop sign, put my foot on the brake and the other on the gas to check if the tranny was slipping. It felt normal until the motor almost stalled out on me. I have had no major work/problems with motor or tranny. 88000 miles 4.0 ltr 4x4 1998 ranger automatic

I'd begin with a pan drop, filter change & full fluid pumpout with the specified Mercon-5 fluid & see how it goes. Most tranny shops recommend this kind of service at 30K miles, for severe service driving, which most of do.
Here is how you can do it yourself & save $100-$150. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...-pump-out.html
On the thump, if you have a two piece drive shaft, maybe it needs a lube job & there is a TSB out for that & you'll find a link for, in the "Tech Info" thread atop this forums thread listing page. Lots of good wrench turning info there, including the tranny pump out link I posted above.
Some thoughts for pondering.
Let us know how it goes.
