I started my wicked wheel installation Saturday. I actually started a few days before with PB Blaster on everything that I thought that I would touch. Either I got lucky or PB Blaster works great because there were some hard tasks (from other's experiences) that did not cause me any grief.
I am doing a wicked wheel upgrade (out of truck experience), IH Up Pipe install (I had leaks in the stock ones), and RR FRx install. I also have a leak on my valve cover (I did the 50 cent mod a couple of months ago), so I am going to hit that. Since I didn't want to fight the front fuel plug, I pulled the AC mount off. I am also going to attempt again to clean out the tube from the exhaust to the EBPV sensor. I still haven't been able to get a .6 weed wacker string through it.
I had installed the RR HPx when I did 50 cent mod, but it was leaking a little. However, the valley is dry enough that a dead butterfly looked very dry.
Pictures won't upload. Will continue this post after church.
Nice little project for you. Did you get some new turbo-pedestal reinstall o-rings to go with the job??? Have fun and if you can, take some pics of your progress, we love pics plus it helps out people that never done this work..
The first picture is my top side creeper (I call it my "Farmboy"). I have never changed out a turbo charger before, but this made reaching everything a lot easier.
I had the turbo out in less than 2 hours. I felt good about that since I also pulled the AC bracket to get ready for my FRx install. Both fuel plugs came out with a small cresent wrench. PB Blasted the little plugs for 2 days when I was blasting everything else.
Between my wife's yard sale (had to answer pricing questions), a rain storm (had to gather tools and put the hood down for a couple of hours), and a bolt that wouldn't come loose on the passenger side manifold (fortunately it was the lower bolt), I was here after dark.
Due to spending a looong time trying to get that exhaust bolt out (rounded the head on the bolt), I did take the down pipe off and had a lot of room. I got the old up-pipes out of truck without taking the bolts loose on the baby's butt.
Anyway, here is where I got at the end of the first day's work. My pyro probe is on the driver's side. You will notice on the passenger side some grinding marks from where I got my small grinder in to take out the rounded bolt. I don't know what I would have done if it had been the upper bolt.
I thought that I was lucky with how the V-band came off of the up-pipes. Then I found this sticker on the turbo.
I bought the truck used from a dealer so I have no idea what was done to it before I got it. Was this a rebuilt tubro?
Would explain the V-band coming off easier, but the maybe PB Blaster is the secret. I don't remember Cory (and many others) using PB Blaster on Bob's V-band at the RRE.
I took about the EBPV and put a new oring on the large opening (behind the snap ring). I had never seen the insides, but can understand how they seep oil through the front. I guess I was expecting to see a bigger seal in the front. I was covered in oil and didn't take a picture of the inside. Sorry for that. That could have been useful to others.
I have to go to Memphis today for 3 days. I got the turbo in last night, but am fighting the V-band. Maybe if it is easy to come off, then it becomes a pain to put back on.........
Anyway, I will post pictures of the install when I get further in the process. I did get the hose ends on for the FRx, but haven't done anything with the regulator.
I also got a .6 weed wacker thread to go through my EBPV sensor tube. Since I pull 10K worth of 5th wheel, I plan to get a decel tune from Jody. I just have to wait till I save up enough money to buy a tuner.
Anyone got some pointers on how to get the up-pipe V-band clamp back on? I had to spread it out to get it off of the pipes. I am thinking about taking the up-pipes back off and bending the clamp smaller. I know that someone else (in another post) had said that they used a long bolt to get the band in shape and then swapped it out.

yep, that was me. I ground down two sides of a longer hex head to fit in there. What I later learned (had to pull turbo again) is that the clamp does fit better if everything is aligned properly. Second time installing the turbo this was not needed. First time I visually inspected the alignment and would swear everything was right. Second time I set the turbo in and could feel the connection was right. V clamp went right on like it should.
I have the baby's butt fighting real well. My issue is that I pryed the V-band open too far when taking it off.
I haven't torqued down the turbo yet (have the bolts in but not torqued). The pipes are loose and I can move the baby's butt around. I just need to move the turbo out a little and get the band more rounded and try it again.
What me and Adam0331 did, he helped me, I used a breaker bar to just lift up the turbo a bit to connect the babies butt, the clamp went around and we connected it but just tightened down the clap to hold it on there then put the bolts down thru the ped and tightened up those a bit, kept going back and forth till it came together. Hope you understand that..By the way, great pics with reports on the job, reps sent..
