Differential Fluid
I'm doin some maintenance on my truck before winter sets in and one of my 'chores' involves changing the differential fluid. I say fluid because I'm unsure what kind of oil/lube I need to put in it.
For starters:
96 F-250 351W, 2wd
Axel Code: 39
I believe the differential has 12 bolts.
I'm almost positive it is a non limited slip differential, 3.55 ratio.
I went to O'reillys today and grabbed a couple bottles of synthetic gear oil that works for limited slip and non limited slip. I was talking to one of the workers and they pulled it up on the computer and said that the computer recommends 4 pints of mercon/dextron trasmission oil. Also, they said it doesn't take a gasket so I bought the black liquid gasket stuff.
This brings up two questions:
1. Is black good or should I use red? (black is supposed to be better for oil situations and withstands up to 500 degrees,)
2. Should I go back and get gear oil? What surprised me even more was that it said 4 pints was recommended yet my repair manual suggests somewhere between 5.5 and 7.5 pints.
I'm hoping to change the fluid tomorrow so any and all advice is welcome asap!
Thanks in advance!
Chris
