Ok, I know I need to replace the wooden bed in my truck. I know the wood is weak, but you can't really tell as it was painted over with the last paint job. The other day while loading something into the back, somebody almost fell through lol. I saw on LMC they have the wood to replace the bed with, but it seemed REALLY expensive. I had a coworker who went to home depot and got the wood, sealed it and put it in his chevy. Is it really alot of work, or is it better to just buy the kit?
Potto, The wood beds like the ones sold at LMC are for show trucks. Wood out in the weather is not the best anyways. You can get 3/4" plywood from the big box for your best price. It will need to be sealed all sides before installing and kept covered to last the longest.
I have no experience with wooden bed's but I always thought you could use just about anything as long as the wood was no to thick. I would also think you would want a hard wood so it would not get dinged up easily.
I am thinking if it's not to thick that composite decking might work and would probbaly not need to be treated.
I did as Jowilker said 3/4 marine plywood- 20 years ago- and the bed is still in fine shape. The main thing is to seal the edges well. Every few years I recoat the surface with wood sealer.
I remember that it was a bear to get the bed back on and get it straight without racking for the bolts. Good luck.
Ok, well definately not a show truck anymore, although I have a feeling at 1 time in the not so distant past she was redone very nicely. So for right now, I will go get some wood and treat it and use that. Does the bed really need to come off, or can I replace 1 piece at a time?
