I want to put a 351 in my 48 M-68. I have found a local 351w from a 76 van. Would this engine be worth buying to put in? My plan would be to go over it and make sure everything is good. Then use it in the truck for a while and eventually totally rebuild it.
1976 is either the last year of small chamber heads or the first year of large chamber. If the former it's not too bad, but either way the engines from these years were pretty low powered. It would be a good rebuilder candidate, if it has small chambers and hardened exhaust valve seats.
A better bet would be the late model roller blocks. They are found in 1994-up trucks and vans. You can then replace the fuel injection manifold with a stock or aftermarket 4V intake manifold and carb.
Another candidate would be the mid 80s HO 351W-4V also found in trucks and vans.
Also, removing an engine from a van is a huge pain in the neck.
After looking around some more, I found a 83 351w HO from a ford truck. The guy wants $400 for it. Is this a good place to start? Would it be better than the 76? My plan is to do a bit of a refresh on it and then possibly build it up one day.
