electric fuel pump

Hello, I have a 1980 F-600 370 ci. I beleive the cam lob for the fuel pump has worn out. I am getting no pumping action even with a new fuel pump. Would an electric fuel pump solve my dilema. What type should I get? How much pressure do I need? Any help would be invited.

Thanks, Jeff Zumbrun

Yes, an ectric fuel pump would get around the cam lobe problem. But why not just replace the worn out cam lobe. It just bols up to the front of the cam unless you have the 6 popper.

Jeff, you need to post your questing in the appropriate category. Look down the list and you'll see some for older and heavy duty trucks. That being said, I don't see how the fuel pump cam lobe can wear out. Have you had someone bump the motor over while holding the fuel pump push rod to see if it is moving? If it is worn out then yes an electric fuel pump should do the trick. Just get an in line one and mount it near the tank.

electric fuel pump

mine is a 8cyl. Would that be more labor intensive than the electric fuel pump solution?

Not really. But while you're in there you could also get a good look at the timing chain as well. With electric, you may have trouble getting the flow volume dialed in and that could take some time. If you just replace the lobe it's done once it's buttoned up. Nothing to dial in. If memory serves me right, the 370 C. I. engine is from the 385 series and they'll run for many trouble free miles.

electric fuel pump

So I just take off the water pump and everything is right infront of me?

How would I find the correct lobe?

I don't know exactly how the fuel pump cam works in your motor, but I had a 351w one time that someone had installed an electric pump on, apparently for the same reason as you. It turned out that there is a single bolt in the center of the cam that holds the cam gear and fuel pump eccentric on. That bolt had worked loose allowing the eccentric to spin (there is a dowell pin but it slipped over that). It took a couple thousand miles before the bolt came loose enough to let the cam gear come off. I'd definitely reccomend disassembly and inspection.

Everything will have to come off the front of the engine. That includes water pump, all brackets, and timing cover. You'll have to remove the harmonic balancer to get the timing cover off. You may not need a new eccentric for the fuel pump. As the previous post stated, it may have just came loose from the bolt that holds it in place. But if you do need a new cam eccentric, you should be able to get one from NAPA or a Ford dealer.
