1997 F 350 crew cab in limbo

I have owned this truck since new in 1997 xlt crew cab 4 x 4 powerstroke, since then I have owned a 1999, 2003, 2005 and a 2008 all crew cab 4 x 4 diesels. All of these have come and gone and the 1997 has remained, I went shopping last week looking at new crew, and decided due to loyality I would spend what I needed to get the old girl back in great shape. The 7.3 has 278,000 on her but still runs pretty good, needs a torque converter. Can I put a newer model 7.3 in it or is this asking for trouble. New done many upgrades and dont know where to start. Please offer any advice

if all you need is a torque converter why don't you just replace that?
