4x4 frame

I just got done building my 351w to put in my 302 powered 76 f-100.

Now with all this snow here in PA I am getting anoyed with driving my blazer (it is 4x4). I want to drive one of my FORDS again.

So I am considering doing a frame swap while doing the engine swap.

my questions are........

Did 4x4's come with 302's in 73-79?
did 4x4's ever come with manual steering?

My c4 needs rebuilt so I figured that I would try to find a frame that has a smallblock c4 and the correct motor mounts to do this swap if they exist.

How hard are 4x4 frames to come by in scrap yards and what is a fair price for one with or without axles?

Also any coments on the difficulty of the swap?

thanks,

John

4x4 frame

i you want a 4x4 truck this is going to be more of a body swap than a frame swap. swap your body over to a 77 1/2 to 79 4x4 frame. that will all bolt up with no problems. now, to get a 351W into a 4x4 is different. they never offered winsors or 302 in 4x4s from 73-79. your going to need a bellhousing if the truck is a standard shift. if it is a automatic (c6) you're going to have to find another tranny out of a 80s 4x4 with a small block bellhousing. if you want to keep the c6 in it, that would have a big block bellhousing ,unless you find a rare 6 cylinder 4x4, you cant. you could use the c6 that is in you 2wd(if thats what it is) but you will have to change the tailshaft so it will bolt up to the transfer case. you use the tailshaft from the 4x4 c6. to do this you have to take everything out from the front to change them. if your tranny is a c4 this wont work and you'd be better off getting a different tranny from a 80s 4x4. you'd be better off just keeping your 2wd a 2wd and finding a ford 4x4. get rid of that chebby!

4x4 frame

Thanks for replying!!!

That is what I was afraid of,

I never saw a 302 4x4 in 73-79

that is why I asked.

My tranny is a C4.

Well for now it looks like I have to drive the blazer in the winter and drive my fords in the summer.

Is there any easy way to do it by switching to a stick?

I am guessing that I would have a motor mount perch problem, right?

4x4 frame

i think the perches are the same. you would just have to change the bellhousing on the 4 speed tranny

Nope, and yup. But trust me, piloting a 4x4 around with 38" tires buried in clay/mud with manual steering sucks!!!
