Hey Rat, I noticed you complaining in another post about a particular paint that you used on your engine . So I thought I would ask...what brand does everyone prefer for engine paint? Any brands to stay away from? Thanks guys. Of course, it's gonna be a while before I have to worry about that. I don't even have anything at the machine shop yet.
I don't remeber what I used on the last 289 I built but the guy bought it from autozone or o'reilly's. I thought it looked great. I used VHT on my 390 and I didn't like it. It was too thin. I like that thicker glossy look. It is presently peeling at the moment. When I do the cam change the engine is coming out and it is going to get stripped and painted right. Hopefully we can come to a good concensus here about what brand is best so I can get some good paint also. I don't understand all the hype about VHT. Its over 6 bucks a can and it is horrible. I used the flat black paint for the engine bay and it didn't really bond with the metal very well either. When the engine comes out I might clean everything up and have a pro do the engine bay.
Chad,
I used VHT when I rebuilt my Torino's 429 (back in 1987). They may have changed the formula for their paint, but it still looks great. The only special thing I did was to use primer on the bare block (heads, oil pan, etc.). After a coat of primer I sprayed the VHT. It's held up fine, even around the headers.
I also primed my 360 when I rebuilt it about two years ago. I grabbed some "alleged" Ford blue paint at the autoparts store and sprayed stuff. I don't remember the brand of paint, but it wasn't VHT. When I ran out, I got another can of Ford blue and I didn't pay attention to the brand. Ends up the 2nd can was a different shade of Ford blue so I have two different shades of blue on my 360. Not a big deal to me, but you might stick w/ the same brand/shade of blue. The 360 looks alright, but the paint did peel a bit around the headers.

I have used Plastikote in the past, but it turned to a creamy blue/green color when my radiator burped all over the engine one day before I had my overflow hose hooked up. It wouldn't wash off or rub out; I had to repaint the engine. Used the same Plastikote again and had similar problems in some areas after washing the engine with a concentrated detergent. Painted the 302 in my Bronco with Krylon. The Ford Blue seemed to mach an old set of OEM painted 360 valve covers quite well. So far, it has been durable, and I had some hot antifreze splash it due to a bad radiator cap. The antifreze didn't seem to even phase it.
