running boards/nerf bars/steps question

I probably shouldve got them as already installed when I bought it last week, but what are you guys using and or are the aftermarket units from say smittybuilt better than the factory boards for a '10 supercrew?

I installed the Amp Research steps on mine. The factory bars are too close to the sill height making for awkward entry, but I think these are the perfect height for stepping up into the cab.

I had the chrome steps put on my '10 screw at the factory. No problems getting in or climbing out.

Mine came with the chrome steps from the factory and I hear what you're saying on this. They seem ackwardly close to the sill, in height and distance away from the truck, even for my small feet.

There are a huge variety of models available and some things you may wish to consider are more indepth than cosmetics;
- stainless steel will last longest but are more expensive, how long are you planning to keep the truck?
- stainless steel may not compliment your trucks cosmetics (one reason folk settle for black powder-coat)
- black powder-coated bars/boards are usually not stainless steel so they will rust sooner and will rust from the inside-out so external care will not deter this from happening.
- chromed bars/boards suffer from the same anomalies as powder coat.
- aluminum does not rust per se but easily deteriorates from corrosion induced by salt and water. Also not as sturdy as steel.
- side nerf bars prove quite valuable in the event of a side collision, they have saved my trucks' doors twice from expensive repair. I'm not confident boards would have done the same.
- painting stainless steel may seem counter productive but if you wish to go a certain paint theme for your vehicle, it is an option. Poly-urethane if you can get it, is the best I know of.

As with anything, we balance desire and need. Regardless of type, I would assuredly get something. The convenience and safety features they provide are excellent.
