Does anyone have info on the best replacement exhaust manifolds? I have an 89 F350 with 7.3 IDI and both have cracks & leak. Also, was this an original equipment design flaw or an indication of how the truck was treated by previous owner? What causes cracks???
Okay, I gotta ask....... do you find these cracks by visual inspection? Cause unless you're turbo'd, I can't see how one would ever detect it by ear. Heck my muffler has to almost fall off before I realize the thing is leaking!!
Mine were cracked when I bought the truck and it was obvious when you first start out or bog the engine or if you let it sit and idle. You can hear it, smell it (exhaust fumes in cab), and see it. It's not noticeable at all traveling down the highway. Both sides are cracked and appear as if they would break into three pieces when removed from the engine. I'm the second owner, the first guy pulled a gooseneck livestock trailer up and down the mountains of central PA.
I had a 5.0L F150 that literally did fall into pieces when the manifold was removed, unfortunately on them it was a common occurrence, so there weren't many around to replace. I ended up finding steel ones from a Mustang and had the y pipe reworked to suit.
I'll have to take another look at some of the ones here, I don't think any are cracked though......
