Trucks a 94 f350 7.3, with a dana 60 and auto hubs. The passenger side keep getting real hot compared to the drivers side. I took it all apart yesterday and took the rotor off, checked the wheel bearings repacked the front one, didnt really look at the back one since its got that seal I didnt want to take it out. About the bearing retainer nut, I know youtr suppsoe to use a special tool but mine was real loose I was able to use a screwdriver and spin it around and around to take it off. Is there a reason why it was so loose? Also when putting it back together how do I know how tight to get the spindle nut, anyone know of a napa part number to go buy the tool?
My passenger side is still getting hot. I have new calipers on both sides and it seems to wanna steer right when I hit the brakes, so apparently the brakes are still dragging, what else could make them drag?
The picture shows a 4 prong socket, but the description states it is a 6 prong.
You really need to completely disassemble those hubs and inspect the bearings and races. Do yourself a favor and pickup up a Haynes service manual for that truck.
1. Using spanner locknut wrench while rotating the hub back and forth, tighten the inner locknut to 68 N-m (50 ft-lb) to seat the bearing.
2. Back off the inner locknut and retighten to 41-54 N-m (30-40 ft-lb) while rotating the hub back and forth.
3. Back off the locknut 90 degrees.
4. Install the lockwasher so the key is positioned in the spindle groove. Tighten the inner locknut, aligning the pin into the nearest lockwasher hole.
5. Install the outer locknut and tighten to 217-278 N-m (160-205 ft-lb) using spanner locknut wrench
This isnt the size socket mine takes but this is the type I need, What size do I need? I think there are two different types of Dana 60 out there becuase mine dont look like some of the stuff I am seeing.
There will be different spindle nuts for the D60 depending on whether it is a front axle or rear axle. My truck has manual hubs, maybe Ford used different spindle nuts for trucks with auto versus manual hubs?
I think im figuring this out. From what I have found out that the spindle nut I have is for the automatic lockouts, and what everyone else has like the one above is for manual hubs.
Found a good picture online showing mine on the left and the newer type on the right.
