Where do you guys find headers to fit the '61-'66 pickups when installing newer V8 engines?
Specifically I will use either a 289 or 351C in the '63 F100. I have both sitting in the barn waiting to be overhauled.
Yep, I know that they are different.
Mostly I think they use trial and error. I was looking for a set when I dropped the 302 in my '61. What I discovered is that you can get application specific headers to drop a SB Chevy into a Ford truck, but there are no headers for the 289/302 in a 61-66. I ended up using stock manifolds off my donor truck and having the exhaust system fabricated from there.
Some guys have mentioned the block hugger style headers as working.
Much obliged, Old Crow.
I kind of figured it might come down to those block-hugger headers or cast iron manifolds. I would really like to put that 351C in the truck.
But I reckon the 289 would be a better idea as far as ease and cost extra unseen costs.
BTW: I like the analogy of the reliability of old trucks & old Colts.
I think just about any 289/302 header would have fit in my case, since the '61 has a straight axle. I believe it gets a bit more complicated on the twin I beam trucks.
My priorities changed when I lost my job in the middle of the swap and using the stock exhaust was a cost cutting move.
My Colt is the 1911 my dad brought back from Italy in '45. According to the serial no. it was part of a big lot mfg. in 1918. It's got Army stamped in the slide, but my ol' man was Navy for 27 years, so who knows where it came from.
I'm still kinda looking for an SAA, 'cause I've always thought it'd be nice to have a wheel gun to go with the auto.
I'd sure like to use the Cleveland instead of the 289, just because it's different. I reckon I'll end up using stock iron manifolds with either engine choice, too as an economical move.
Hell, it's just going to be our "shop truck" anyhow. It will probably even have "WILD WEST ARMS" (our gun shop name) painted on the doors.
Best of luck job hunting.

MG
Try National Parts Depot, I think I saw such headers made just for this setup in their catalog, google them, they have a online catalog
Not a problem. After 3 months of unemployment the local Chevy dealer put an ad in the paper. Stopped by, filled out an app and 3 days later was back at work.
The truck is now my daily driver when it's too wet to get the Harley out.
Not familiar with straight axle chassis, found installing long tube headers for both 65's were not an issue. Suggest run a search on topic, seem to recall Member mentioning they had a problem with the 'huggies'. Personally, wish I had kept the stock exhaust. Again, not familiar with the chasssis, certainly worth checking into member Eston Newbern's suggestion and contact NPD.
If you can find headers for a 351 into a f100 up to 78 it should fit. If you go with a mini starter and long tubes it will fit, theres some issues if you have 4wd but you dont so you should be ok.
I have been looking at a '78 F150 with a 351M and a '79 Bronco with a 400M.
It sure looks like I would have no problem using the headers that go on those truck/engine combinations in my '63 chassis. I'm pulling the 4X4 stuff out of mine anyhow. I will still have to find a rear sump pan & pickup tube, though.
Thanks for all of the replies. I'll so some searching now, too.
