I have a 1999 F-350SD with a 5.4, the blinkers started either sitting in the on position after about 10-15 blinks or just staying on. About 3 weeks ago the transmission started being all erratic like I had bag gas and did not want to shift. My "Check Engine Light" finally came on last week and it came up as a bad Vehicle Speed Sensor. Went to the Ford dealer and replaced it, truck ran great but the light never went off. Today I am driving and it starts not wanting to shift and now as its running the starter keeps engaging on its own, what the hell, any ideas?
The blinker problem; Most likely a corroded light socket connection in the front or rear signal bulbs. If it happens on both left and right, I would suspect a defective flasher unit.
The tranny problem; I would get the codes read again. If you have the same code, was it cleared before? If you are not sure, I would get it cleared and then drive it a little bit and get the codes checked again. If you have the same vehicle sensor code, I would pull the sensor out and make sure it doesn't have metal shavings on it. If it does, you might have a mechanical problem in the rearend. If it's clean, I would check the sensor wiring from the sensor, all along the frame rail to the front fro damage.
The starter problem; Have you replaced the solenoid lately?
All these problems may be related if the wiring along the driver's side frame has been damaged or has melted against the exhaust piping. The neutral safety circuit that drives the starter solenoid comes from that area, as well as the rear turn lighting and the speed sensor wiring.
Thanks alot for your help, I'll be getting out there under the truck tonight to do as you say. Hopefully its just the solenoid or needs resetting. Once again thank you.
Just to post an update. Read the code again and cleared it, light went off and truck running fine. Changed solenoids, truck and plow, and found a worn out ring connector on the starter cable, all replaced and good. truck was running good for about 5 days. Went for a ride yesterday and the truck started not wanting to change gears again. Finally got home and CEL came on again. Go out this morning to get coffee and the lights on my dash were half on and there is some sort of beeping noise coming from the dash, key not in. When I shut the truck off lights and noise will be there intermittently.
I couldnt find anything else on the wiring, so putting it in the shop.
Check engine light came on again, code was 0500 VSS fault, which was the same code as before and this is a new VSS. Don't know what else it could be, something keeps blowing this sensor, any more ideas?
