Those could be sweet for plowing. Run a big ol' plow on the front and stuff the rear full of ballast.

It almost looks like the wheel base is less than the track width. I wonder what would have a worse ride - that or a cab-over? They probably have some big gears too. They aren't street trucks - just pull at relatively low speeds.

These things are perty sweet. We have a few on base here that they use for moving torpedos and stuff around. I don't see them out and about that often, but it's funny seeing that short truck pull a long tube...

Yep they are "Bobtails" drove many different versions while in the AF. One thing was common very harsh/horrible ride. They were governed to about 15MPH and would easily move 80K.

I hauled one last week.

The driveshaft is about 3 feet long.

6.4 Powerstroke. NO DPF. I resisted the temptation to open the hood and look inside. I'm VERY curious to see what was "missing" from the civilian version. And also curious to know what the difference in reliability is, with all the "missing" components.

It was an AirForce unit, and had 1/2-inch thick steel-plate bumpers. The vehicle info sticker said it weighed 8450.

Thumbs up

One thing's for sure, one of those would smack a Jeep around all up and down a trail.

Funny you mention that, Redford.

I thought of the same thing, the only place I've ever seen them was on Bagram back in '06. Must be an Air Force thing?

We don't get to play with those in the Army.

Wide, heavy, and minimal axle articulation? I don't think so.

Sorry, I was thinking short wheelbase, all the power you could want, and it's a SUPER DUTY. Maybe you should go join a JEEP forum. Naw I'm just kidding, that's just the way us dumb noobs think.

I won't hold it against ya. I drove a TJ for 13 years. It's an amazing rig. I wish I could have kept it. But, I had to sell it when I bought my SD, which I love. It does everything I ask it to do. As long as I don't ask it to be a Jeep.

They're both very good tools. They're just best used for very different jobs. You shouldn't use a hammer to drive a screw, or a screwdriver to drive a nail. And, I wouldn't dare take a SD (of any length) some of the places I took my Jeep. Of course, I wouldn't use my Jeep to tow my 6500# trailer, either. Especially with the wheeler and firewood loaded in the bed.

You know something though, you never know what you would do if you had the money to do whatever you want. In that case, I woud push one of these to the limit just to see what that limit was.
Btw I just got done putting up some pics in my garage. Check em out.
