i have an 86 302HO motor (# E6SE) will the E7 heads fit on this motor? or will the valves hit the flat-top pistons? or should i just keep the E6SE heads?
I was told when I got the motor that it was an'88.. wish i would've known how to to decipher the casting #'s then.. are the 86 HO's any good? i know they have less power than the 87/88 (200 hp vs. 225 hp) would the E7 heads give it that extra 25hp? the only differences i can tell between 86 and 87/88 are the pistons and heads.
The E7 heads should fit onto the 86 block. The 87 HO engine also has a slightly higher lift cam, but it's probably not going to interfere with the piston (you should check if you're going to try the install). The 87 HO also has a slightly different intake manifold, and a bigger throttle body. The difference is more than the 25HP; there was also the increase in torque. To get all that, you would also need the later EEC computer.
when i get the heads i will check it out..hopefully the valves won't hit the pistons..the E6 heads I have now have some bad rust in a few of the ports(see thread "water in 302")i figured why waste time cleaning these up when i could install better ones.. i was also thinking of doing a little port work with a dremel..how much lower is the torque on the 86 motor? i have the intake, but not the plenum, and the motor is tore apart at the moment..so changing intakes or even the cam shouldn't be a problem..should i use a truck style intake or the 5.0HO/mustang style? as for the computer, i will look for the 87/88+..i will have to use the mustang wiring harness too right? i plan on putting this in my 82 F100 pickup.
E7 heads are a direct swap on this motor, yes they are an upgrade and no they won't cause P-V clearance problems. The truck intake flows better than any of the factory car style intakes so it's a good choice as long as you have room under the hood for it, an '89-92 mustang EEC, MAF meter, and wiring harness would be the ultimate setup for this, there are several companies that make complete aftermarket wiring harnesses for this combo too.
