So lately i've been trying to drop a 300 and a NP435 in my 1964 Ford f250 and it seems that every time I take one step forward I some how take two steps back. First off, I can't find any engine crossmembers for my 300. Just for V8s. I don't want to make any becuase I don't trust myself yet and I don't want to pay some to make some unless I have to. Next off, no one I call knows what there talking about (LMC, NPD, O'REILYS, Jegs, auto zone, and multiple junk yards) and recently I just paid $300 bucks for a flywheel and clutch for a 390 instead of a 300. That REALLY made me mad. Lastly, I just bought a NP435 and now my drive shaft won't bolt up and is to long (by 2 1/2 in). How would I fix this problem.
Also, the engine came out of a 1972 F350 so it mounts up front instead off the side. Since I had to replace the tranny and now the mounts are off the tranny and not the bell houseing can I just use the engine mount that came out of the F350 with the NP tranny or will that put to much presure on the bell housing? Thanks for the help.
if your driveshaft is to long, figure out the exact length you need, Then get it cut down welded back up and balanced.
Hopefully you will find a cross member, or someone to affordably build one. If you have welding skill at all why not try making your own? Heavier steel is easier welding then thinner stuff.
Sorry I don't know much about the 300 or what swapping one in entails.
If you would like I could take a few pictures of my 1966 f100 with a 300 and a 3 speed. It has the standard cross member for the 65-79 F-Series, and a cross brace at the back of the transmission. I currently have my transmission out to replace the clutch so I can get some pictures that would be harder later.
Does the New Process have a place for a mount near the back?
I'll take some pictures tomorrow before I put the trans back in.
Look to Speedway motors for the FE mount. I believe the one they sell accepts the factory flat single bolt mounts for FE. If it does it will also accept the Factory I6 engine mounts.
All 300's have the side mount bosses.
Do not mount the engine with just the front single mount and a rear trans mount. The engine will roll over quite quickly in the engine compartment.
All most all transmission swaps require drive shaft modifications. Measure three times and take it to a shop to modify it. Center of output to center of input.
When you make your driveshaft measurements, make sure the truck is on the ground with the weight on the wheels. There has to be slip in the system as well. Some so this by a carrier bearing and come cars have slip built into the transmission yoke. Your driveshaft shop will be able to tell you how to measure. And don't panic...if you live anywhere near civilization, there's a driveshaft shop nearby. It's usually in the industrial part of town, although I've stumbled across shops that do it in small towns in central MO.
