was there any trucks in the 80-86 years that were 4x4 with a 460 stock? if so what transmitions did they come with? was there any with a 5 speed? if not what year did ford produce a 4x4 truck with a 460 and a 5 speed?
Hello,
Yes Ford made a production 460 in the 80-86 years. I have a 84 F250 4x4 w/ a straight 4-spd. in it . I beleive they started fuel injecting the 460 in 88 but don't hold me to it. I think that was the year they also started putting in a 5-spd. They only put 460's in the F250 or F350.
Have a good one!
The 460 was dropped from 79-82, and re-introduced in 1983 alongside the new 6.9L diesel, this was also the first year the 460 came in a 4x4 from the factory. The 460 was only avalable in the F250 HD and F350, and, was backed by the same tranny options as the diesel, a B-W T19 D fully syncronised 4 speed, and the 'good ol C6 3 speed auto.
The 460 went EFI in 87.5, and the ZF 5 speed came into use at around the same time.
Evan
how easy would it be to put a 5 speed into one of the earlier carbed trucks>? i bet i could get one att he junk yard for less than 500 used and if i already had the truck with a 4 speed, how hard would the swap be? is it a direct replacement or am i going to need to get the driveshafts, t case and tranny all together?
You'll need the bell housing, tranny, and t-case as "one" unit. I don't know if the rear block bolt patterns changed on the 460 from carbed to FI units, but I can pretty much guarantee that the tranny's are different. Check
for a bell housing. You will need new driveshafts because the length of the tranny/t-case assembly will be longer. I had a 93 Chevy with a 5 spd and the wife has a 88 Blazer with a 4 speed and there is a good 4 inches diff in length.
As for mounts, again, check advanceadapters for new mounts.
A good used 4WD smallblock ZF goes for $800-1300, and remans start at $1200 and go up. I don't know about 2WD or bigblock (diesel) prices. They're all SCARCE, though...
