Rear View Mirror

Hey guys...I find that to my taste, the rear view mirror is not large enough. As such I have a few questions for the panel....

1) Is it easy to remove the stock mirror (not auto dimming) and replace with a larger mirror from another vehicle?
2) Do those slip over mirrors you see at autozone, etc actually work properly?
3) Has anyone tried that 2-3 feet long segmented mirror that supposedly shows all of the rear view (à la NASCAR type racing mirror)?

Thanks for the help.

Pep boys has a longer mirror...it's about 3 inches longer. I swapped mine out with great success.

I recently went shopping at the JY with my wife. While I was looking and accumulating some items, she mentioned that I needed a new rear-view mirror (my old one had some black splotches showing through the mirror part). I quickly acquired a good one from another donor. Once we were home, and compared it to the old one, we found it to be at least 2 to 3 inches longer than the old one. I can now see pretty much the whole bed, whereas before I could only see the whole tailgate.
As far as installing, if it does not fit the metal piece that is glued to your windshield then you will have to replace them both. Heat the metal piece with a lighter and it will pop off. You might need to give it a helping hand with putty knife. When you glue the new one on, make sure you use the professional strength mirror adhesive. I used the permatex kit, I think it was $5 or $6.
As far as removing your old mirror, some of them have an allen screw locking them in place. With others you may have to use a small screwdriver to release the catch holding them on the metal piece. Either way, they will be separate from the glued on metal piece.
As a side note, I used a piece of masking tape on the front of the windshield to mark the spot where the metal mirror attachment piece was glued, to aid in placement of the new piece.

Funny how some people get so used to the windshield mirrors, while other absolutely hate them - the day mine fell off the windshield was one of the best days of my life, lol I do have the big towing mirrors with 3" blind-spot stick-ons so I can easily see pretty much everything behind me except for what's like a foot from my bumper...

Oh, when you go about installing the new mirror, make sure you scratch the windshield glass some where you plan on gluing it or the adhesive won't hold as go as it can, also surfaces need to be absolutely spotless clean else the mirror will keep falling off. If you have a junkyard near you go there and see what Ford vehicles have a mirror that you like, many of the newer ones have map lights and compass in them and are also wider, but they use the same wedge to go on the windshield like your truck.

You may also want to move the mirror a little higher on the windshield, helps eliminate any blind spots looking forward.
