where did the speedo needle go???

Problem : speedo needle is out of sight.

Subject: '56 F250

Background: speedo started fluctuating above 30 MPH. bouncing between 40 and 75. A 'wiring' noise emitted from the cluster and vibrated the dash. Speedo operated normally after about 5 min or so of the fluctuating, but returned about 20 miles later. A smack to the dash would temporally stop the noise for a sec or 2. Needle suddenly disappeared. Speedo cable was disconnected to check for stuck cable. drove truck, cable spinning freely. oiled it anyway and reinserted in cluster and drove down the block. needle is still not visible.

Question/ Hypothesis: I am assuming the spring & associated components went caput. Can / is there a way to fix them? Service book doesn't state much.
