Base Timing

I know my '86 Ranger should have a base timing of 10 degrees BTC. I was wondering, is it necessary to disconnect any wiring from the distributor when checking this value with a timing light? Thanks; Haynes does not detail the procedure.

You disconnect the spout connector to set the 10 degree base timing. It is a plug in the wiring harness near the distributor.

On my 88' 2.3L it was up by the battery/air box kind of low by the battery tray.

On an '85 2.3EFI it is hanging out of the wire loom between the driver side inner fender and the engine. A rectangular plug with a wire loop externally visible.
