I'm looking for a dipstick

Anyone know where I can score a dipstick for a '65 with a 240?

LMC doesn't have 'em...

65_Guy -

I have an extra one for sale. It even has the "C5" Ford part number stamped on it. Let me know.

Thanks,
Dan M.

(sigh) Open your peepers and take another look in the parts catalog, kiddo....you will see that...

...There are three different engine oil dipsticks for (I assume), a 1965 F100/250 240. It depends on whether the truck has 2WD or 4WD, which oil pan capacity it has (5 or 6 quarts).

65_Guy: Please...when asking questions, list ALL the pertinent details.

C5AZ6750E .. Engine Oil Dipstick-5 Qt. / 12.38" top of shield to fill / 13.36" shield to add / 14.34" shield to end / Obsolete

Fits: 1965/72 F100/250 240 I-6 2WD / 1965/72 Galaxie/LTD 240 I-6.
------------------------------------------------------------------
C5TZ6750C .. Engine Oil Dipstick-6 Qt. / 12.81" top of shield to full / 13.50" shield to add / 14.34" shield to end / Obsolete

Fits: 1965/72 F100/250 240/300 I-6 2WD / 1965/66 F500/600 240/300 I-6 / 1967/72 F350 240/300 I-6.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C5TZ6750J .. Engine Oil Dipstick / 12.52" top of shield to full / 13.06" shield to add / 13.82" top of shield to end / Obsolete

Fits: 1965/66 F100/250 240/300 I-6 4WD / 1965/67 Econoline 240 I-6 / 1965/66 F350 240/300 I-6 / 1965/72 B/F/N/LN600 300 I-6 H/D.

Uh huh...
'C5' are the first two digits of the ID engineering number's 4 digit prefix. It's not an actual Ford part number, and there are FIVE different 240/300 "C5" dipsticks.

The three above, another for the P Series Parcel Delivery, another for the C Series Tilt Cab.

And...there are two more 'C5' dipsticks, one for 1965/66 F100/350 352's and another for 1965/67 Galaxie/LTD 352/390's.

If you post the entire ID engineering number, I'll give you its Ford part number.

There are no Ford part numbers marked on any parts after 1956, just ID engineering or casting numbers.

Bill Couldn't you just ask the OP what his truck setup is without all that rambling typing about stuff that might not matter to him at all?

John,no offense, but has anyone pointed out your resemblance to Col.Sanders?LOL!Actually, many of us don't consider it rambling,I'm always trying to further my understanding of the Ford numbering(ahem!) system.I'm realizing how easy it is to screw things up by only getting a partial number. If the OP is offended,he's a big boy,he can speak for himself.Bill is probably the single most helpful, and interesting person on the site.If you keep taking shots at him, many more members are likely to come to his defense, than to yours.Let it go,bro.

Hm... Not sure if it's a 5 or 6 qts. My book says 6 qts. but I haven't changed the oil yet to confirm (I've only had the truck for a week).

The Chilton's manual I have says the '65 240 2WD takes 6 qts. and the '66-'67 240 2WD takes 5 qts.

NumberDummy, this doesn't jive with your numbers. Thoughts? I imagine whatever book you have is better than mine, just curious why the difference in #'s. (So, from my end of the equation, I DID list all of the pertinent details. ;-)

It's not my place to ask the OP what he's working on, it's his job to tell us.

I don't know what matters to the OP or not since all he said was he needed a dipstick for a 65 240.

65 240 what? F100, F250 or? 2WD or 4WD? Heck, it might even be a 1965 Galaxie or LTD w/a 240.

I typed that jazz for everyone, not just for the OP. Now everyone that reads the post will know that there are three different dipsticks and what their applications, measurements and part numbers are.

65_Guy: A Chilton manual is not a Ford shop manual, neither is it the 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog, where I typed most of the info from.

And...you still haven't listed all the pertinent details. So far all you've said is 1965 240 and I assume your reference to 2WD applies.

Guess since I was in the "F100" forum, folks would be able to decipher which truck I was talking about. Yes, it's a 2WD.

So, the consensus is the C5TZ6750C for a '65 F100 240 2WD?

This is the 1961-1966 F100 and larger F-Series Trucks forum.

So, for all we know, you could have an F100, F250, F350, F500, or F600, since all these trucks were available with the 240 I-6.

Since the parts catalog lists two different dipsticks for 1965 F100 2WD 240 I-6's, I have no idea which one is correct.

The difference is miniscule, fractions of an inch (see specs in post #4). Both dipsticks are obsolete.

There are 83 of C5AZ6750E available from Ford Dealers, obsolete parts vendors / 30 of C5TZ6750C available from these sources.

C5AZ6750E: The closest source to you is:

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH (800-543-4959) who 74.
---------------------------------------------------------
C5TZ6750C: The closest sources to you are:

JST AUTOMOTIVE in Lebanon TN (615-443-3086) has 1.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC (800-476-9653) has 1.

GREEN SALES CO. has 10.

Ok. So with further digging (and me remembering that I actually have an original owner's manual, albeit a rodent chewed disintegrating piece of history) the '65 F100 2WD with a 240 takes 4qts plus 1qt with a filter change. Problem solved. Now I know which dipstick I need. Thanks to all for the input.

I think there's another thread out there with questions about oil capacities. Anyone know the title off the top of their head? I may jaunt over there and spread the love.

And as a side note, looks like I need to get rid of the Chilton's manual and buy a real shop manual. It told me my engine took 6 qts. of oil and 19 qts. of 50/50 in the cooling system, whereas the owner's manual says 5qts. of oil and 14qts of 50/50 in the cooling system. Geez, if the Chilton's is that far off on these simple details, who knows how bad the "facts" are on more sensitive applications. Just sayin'!

The chiltons for that era wa finalised in 86 as it covers 65-85 F series. That means your truck was already 20 years old when it was printed.
