Hello fellow FTEr's. I acquired a nice old industrial drill press from work recently. Circa 1940 something. It's almost 6 feet tall and weighs quite a lot, as it looks to be lots of cast iron. It came with the following motor:
1/2 HP 1800 RPM 60HZ 3 Phase/220V
The speeds are adjusted via tilting the motor mount and moving the rubber belt to the different sized pulleys.
The dilema is i don't have 3 phase 220v in my garage. And i don't know if the motor works. So i have the following two a/c motors at my disposal. Which one would be a better replacement?
1/4 HP 1075 RPM 60HZ 1 Phase/115V 3.5Amps(4.6A max)
or
1/8 HP 825 RPM 60HZ 1 Phase/220V 1.0 Amps
I don't have an extra 220V single phase breaker in the garage, but that should be easy enough for me to add. The 220V motor is 1/8hp, but the 110v motor is stronger at 1/4hp.
What do ya'll think would be a better replacement?
I think I would try to get a 1/2 HP 120v single phase motor. trying to run that large of a drill on 1/4 HP would tax the motor and and 1/8 HP is definitely out of the question.
1/2 HP shouldn't be hard to find at a garage sale or swap meet. probably cost $20 or so. Make sure it is a capacitor start motor, not something for a fan or a washing machine. It needs to be capable of high starting torque.
Check Graingers, they have every industrial electric motor under the sun in their Dayton brand.......bound to be a single phase 120vac motor that will suit the bill for a cheap price. None of your motors have enough grunt to do the job if you start using large drill bits.
