I have a 1992 Ford F150 with it's original 5.0 and OD trans. The truck is a daily driver and work vehicle. I sometimes use it to pull a 24 foot pontoon boat and this is where I have traction problems. The boat is actually very light since it's all aluminum and gutted on the inside pretty much. The only time I have problem with traction is pulling it out of the water when it's wet and in dirt or gravel. I believe putting some kind of limited slip in the rear end would greatly help this problem. My question to you guys is what do you recommend? I am assuming something along the lines of an Auburn LSD setup? I need something that will still drive good in rain, unlock in turns of course, etc (daily driving) but have the extra traction when needed.
Thanks a lot for any suggestions on what to get and any pro's and con's on this setup.
I don't know how much trouble and expense you want to go to....so its hard to make a recommendation. I imagine you have a 8.8 rear axle, there are various LS units available for it.
If you are looking for the most traction and ease of installation....I would have you look at installing a Lock-rite locker in it. As long as you have an open carrier now...you can install the LR yourself in a couple of hours without having to remove the carrier.
The LR does unlock around corners (though you might hear a small amount of clicking). It will give you full traction even if one tire is off the ground (LS will bias to that side).
The down side to a locker is that they tend to push the front end when going straight ahead, I.E. you try to make a turn when conditions are very slippery (mud, snow, ice).
Most LSD's are milder mannered on the street, you really don't know they are even there until traction becomes a problem, but they are not as positive as a locker and they will require the removal of the carrier and ring gear to install.
Anyway, just something to think about. Locker or LS depends upon your conditions. If you drive a lot on snow, ice, LS will be better. All other conditions.. and the locker will offer the most traction IMO.
