Looking at converting my '63 F100 4X4 from a 292 V8/4speed to a '80 351W/C-6 automatic. Basically, I need an automatic due to knee problems. I have access to a van with the donor eng. and trans. and really don't see any major problems. The transfer case is divorced so that is just a modified driveline. Motor mounts and tranny mounts can come from the donor with the help of the welder. I can get the donor for around $500 and there are other items of intrest such as AC and cruise. Eng runs good with about 84000 miles. I believe this is better than trying to find a trans. to mate to the 292. Any hints or suggetions?

My nickels worth! Don't give up on finding a automatic trans for your truck and 292. Try the want ads here. Or the other Ford sites for a conversion that will hook a C4 to that motor. You might consider a softer clutch or a hydraulic clutch. Installing a later model engine and trans may be the end result but I would look a little longer. These old 4x4's are getting fewer as time goes on and should be saved if possible.

In stead of using a donor vehicle for mounts you might consider getting them from a place like Obselete Ford. I do however recommend the weld in mounts instead of the bolt on ones as tyhey are much stronger mounts. They make the engine mounts and the mount for the C6, and I think it is pretty reasonable. I think it is a fairly easy project but I don't know about the Cruise control and things. If you can find an auto steering column to use it will prevent the gear selection from being backwards. Hope this helps
