I have to get to some on the nuts/bolts of my tailgate tire carrier and that requires some of the trim in the rear (passenger side) to be taken out. Where do i start to do it? i don't want to damage any of the plastic pieces as they will be a real headache to replace...
The bolts that hold the hinges to the rear corner of the truck thread directly into gussets inside the rear fender. You can't get at any hardware through the interior of the truck. Just unbolt the hinges on the carrier from the outside. You won't have any hardware falling off on the inside of the fender because the gussets inside the rear fender are threaded so there are no nuts inside.
On the other hand the latch plate on the tailgate that holds the carrier "closed" has hardware inside the gate that you can get to by removing the inspection panel on the interior side of the tailgate. Just make sure the rear glass is UP or you won't be able to reach the nuts around the glass.
Well, the imbecile that painted the truck apparently changed that, and not only that, he replaced the oem bolts with non-stainless ones, and they are rusting out... so now i'm badly in need of replacing them, i'll try to work this out tomorrow and tell you my finds, thx Grey.
If someone replaced the hardware and drilled out the threaded holes in the rear fender gussets I suppose its possible that they got up inside and put nuts on the new bolts. They would almost HAVE to take out the interior panel in the back and cut access holes in the inner steel of the truck bed to do it though. The upper hinge is especially high up in the rear corner of the bed and getting a hand up in there would be virtually impossible.
