96 AWD 4.0. On a recent trip the PCM would lose the vehicle speed input intermittently. This would cause the transmission to drop to first gear at highway speeds. I replaced the speed sensor on the rear pumpkin and it was good for a while, but recurred. Then I taped the plug to the sensor and that helped a little. I added 1/2 quart gear oil to the rear end at that time as I noted it was low. The only way to reset the system was to pull over and turn the vehicle off. It was a crap shoot on when it would recurr. With the new sensor, the speedometer needle would bounce around. When it was steady, the problem would occur.
Thanks, Tom. I'll check that out. Do you have to replace the entire instrument set or can you just do the PSOM? I guess if you are going to open the dash, just replacing the entire thing would be worth the effort.
The PSOM is attached to the back of the instrument cluster. I don't remember if you can replace just that. I got the whole cluster from the junk yard. It ran for several years without a problem. Then a tree fell on the van.
I doubt you can buy just the PSOM. I never checked. Go ahead and do the whole thing. See if you can get one with less mileage on it. Mine did' I wrote it down incase I sold it later. It ended up in the scrap yard so it didn't matter.
