Well I have been putting it off too long. I need to get my truck going again. I am looking for opinions from those that have done this a dozen times.
5 spd 4 wd - 93 idi turbo
What would the suggestion be for a clutch. I do not know which flywheel I have yet. I do work this truck pretty hard pulling trailers and tractors and equipment. I need something that will stand up to the abuse.
Do I need to drop the whole tranny and transfer? Or can i just move them back a little bit without taking the cross member off? I am not looking forward to this, hence why it isnt done yet. But winter is coming and I am going to need 2 4wd diesels going to haul equipment for snow removal. Farmers almanac is calling for quite a bit of snow in Oklahoma.
So, tips suggestions and just general, "John your a dumba$$" comments are truly welcomed.
do you have a dmf or smf now? you can leave the tc attached to the tranny and pull the whole thing, remove the cross member and slide it back enough to get in there. there are 6 bolts for the cross member, 4 for the skid plate and 2 nuts that mount the tranny to the cross member. invest in a tranny jack or the tranny head for a standard jack. get the 2 top bolts from the engine compartment first, then the 4 lowers from under it.
be sure to mark the crank to flywheel so it can go back on the same. to save a little on the tug factor drain both the tranmission and transfer case of oil. also find or make a rod slightly smaller than the input shaft on the pilot bearing, pump grease behind till full put rod in and hit, it builds pressure behind bearing and pushes it out, may have to add grease a few times.
Your prolly going to find the price of the DMF is going to steer You towards a SMF conversion. It's a better choice for HEAVY haulers. But be forewarned, they are noisy.
Do some searching. Lotsa info out there. Go over to OB.net and ask RLDSL about clutches. He's a HEAVY haulin SOB. He's been thru clutches, and KNOW'S what works.
if you have a dmf the flywheel could be bad. when you separate the engine and trans, put your hands on the flywheel and rotate it clockwise as far as it will go, mark the flywheel and starter gear then rotate the flywheel counter clockwise as far as it will go. if theres (iirc) 5/8" of play in that rotation then your flywheel is shot and smf is the way to go. you can still find a dmf on ebay but its gonna run you around 700-800 plus the money for the clutch and pressure plate. if you have a smf then you have 2 ways of going about it. either replace the clutch, pressure plate, pilot bearing and throwout bearing and check the condition of your flywheel to either be replaced or resurfaced. or you can go to a clutch place and have your flywheel resurfaced if need be, your clutch plate refrictioned (they put new friction material on it) and get the two new bearings. that is by far the cheapest rout. not sure how much you know about clutches but if your flywheel is shiny then you have to have it resurfaced. they will be able to do it at the clutch place. this job could be as cheap as 150 or as expensive as 900. depends on what you got and how good it still is
Well 250K on the clock I dont expect much of anything...LOL I cannot even move the slave fork. It is solid as a rock. I am toying with just taking it into the shop and letting them do it. But I sure do like working on these trucks, hell any truck. I have replaced clutches, too many to count. I am not expert by any means. I am familiar enough to tackle it myself. I just dont know if I feel like it...LOL Call me lazy.
I do appreciate the responses guys and the tips. I will go check out obn.
10-4 on the 1500 out the door. I am sure enough doing this one myself. LOL WOW Just the clutch and smf upgrade is going to be just shy of a grand. So I am starting a fund raiser for my 93.....ROFLMFAO! My baby needs a transplant, she is on life supports right now!! LOL WOW Still looking forward to driving it again though. It is sure enough worth it. I do appreciate all of your replies folks. I am going to be on here as I am doing it just in case I need someone to take me by the hand.
