I can't tell you everything but the big differences you would have to deal with that may not make it worthwhile.
First, the PCM won't drive the dash display because the systems are completely different..
The trans won't bolt up unless you make a change in transmission.
The trans used may need PCM control to shift it unless you use an aftermarket standalone controller or use an earlier transmission.
The cooling system will need alterations plus a bunch more items as you encounter them.
After it's all in, then the troubleshooting comes to clear all the little issues.
It would be easier to swap a 5.4 in than a 5.7 push rod motor and have less issue with exhaust, transmission, ignition and cooling, motor mounts etc.
Think about if you want to go to all the work to accomplish it.
When it's over, you are the 'ingeneer" that has to keep it running afterward. No shop would touch it.
Resale value, emissions inspection may all be a factor.
Good luck.

Also the driveshaft (or shafts) also won't match up once you get the motor and trans in so you'll have to get a custom one of these as well

Basically if you need this for a daily driver I wouldn't do it. If you just want to do something cool and use it occasionally for a hunting/winter truck then it might be worth it if you are a fair welder and a good wrench.

I second the 5.4 triton or maybe the v10. I hear the v10 is a beast right out of the box. should be some in good shape in wrecking yards around. I think that there's a website out there that will search them for you, but I can't remember what it is.

Welcome to the board...
Actually, the transmissions are the same transmissions used in the older trucks(starting around 1990), the names have changed and improvements made, but they will bolt up. Getting the transmission to function would be another story entirely. I suspect if you reverted back to a c4 or c6 then you may have better luck. Personally, if I was so inclined...I would get rid of all the electronics, drop in an old carbed engine with a c6, some custom gauges........ Of course if you're going to go through all that, you might as well go for the big block..
Either way, you'll run into a 101 hurdles.
Having said that...Bluegrass is right I'm sure that it would just be easier to swap in a 5.4 liter. You could then further mod it and gain some extra ponies if you wanted to.

Keep on Truckin!
