You should be able to swap the axles, but I'd measure them both first. I think they're all the same length, but when I did mine, I thought someone said they did make some different lengths. If the axles are the same year you should have no problem.

The bearings have to be pressed off and on. I think I had mine done for about $40. Bearings can be anywhere from $10 to $50 a set, depending on where you go, and can cost $5 to $40 to be pressed on.

I got mine from Autozone for about $20 for both and had a shop press them on for another $20. I could have bought them at another store for $50 and they'd press them on for free.

Disassembly of the old rusted brakes and the 4 nuts holding the axles in is the toughest part.

Good luck.

I think the 9"er's out of vans are wider. I'd measure from the wheel mounting surface to the pinion on the two axles and compare. This way you wouldn't have to pull the shafts. If they're the same, then swap 'em.

both of my 9''s are out of 79 F-150's so i am guessing there the same,

hopefully this weekend, i will be able to get this stuff done, i have acess to a 110,000 pound press where i work, is there any trick to pressing off the collars, the berrings will just slide off after that right? or do they have to be pressed off too?

I can't remember if the bearings were pressed or not. I'm thinking they're loose. As for removeal, the instructions that came with my Timkin bearings said to drill a hole into the collar and use a punch and hammer to break the collar off. I passed on that method and took them to a shop to have them done.

Sorry I can't be more help.

buy only timken bearings if you can. should come with new seals as a kit. i don't trust any other brand. made in USA! and yes to drilling and chiseling the old retaining collar off. i drilled a touch too far, into the shaft but it was ok as long as you sand the ridge down, if it leaves one.
