460 starting probems

Here's the problem. I have a 1990 f-350 with a 460, I can start it fine, after I drive it a while I can't start it again, unless I recharge the battery. I know it sounds like a bad alternator, but here's the rest of the story. I checked the battery and it has 12 volts, I'll start the engine and read the battery and it shows about 14 volts, which to me says the alternator is charging. So why will the battery not take a charge from the alternator. If I put it on a charger it will take a full charge in a short time. One more thing, as I'm driving down the road, the gauge on the dash shows about 15 volts, but the longer I drive the gauge seems to drop. I have to get this figured out, every time I take the truck some place it have to leave it running. Gas is get real expensive. Thanks for the help.

Batteries do get intermittent and go bad. The only way to find out is to swap another known good battery in and see what happens.

Like dave says, it can still be bad inside......One of the parts stores, like AdvancedAuto or Autozone can test your electrical system for free which includes a load test on the battery......I had one that "seemed" to be good and it tested bad......it wasn't that they just wanted to sell me a battery cause I had bought it at the other place and the tech suggested I take it back there under the warranty, which I did.......went back later to the first place for another test and all was well......
