I purchased a 93 2WD F150 5.0 Flareside with an AOD and 3.55's a week ago and I'm thinking about some performance and efficiency upgrades but I need some help. I once owned a bone stock 93 Mustang GT 5 speed and it was somewhat quick back in the day so I know what a 5.0 is capable of.
My goals are:
275 HP and 20 MPG
My thoughts are:
Shuck the AOD for a 5 speed
Long tube headers
Duals out the side in front of the rear wheels
Leave the short block alone for now and add bolt on performance items
Use mostly factory Ford parts which are easy to come by
My questions are:
Which factory intake to use (Lightning, GT40, or something else)?
Which heads?
What 5 speed transmission can I use with the buckets and console?
Other useful information:
The truck will never haul a heavy load or tow a heavy trailer
Funds are limited but I have access to parts cars/trucks
I do all of my own work
Truck has a full factory Gen 1 Lightning suspension
Truck will be used on occasion to run errands and have a little fun with
Any and all help with this project is appreciated.
gt40 heads and intake if you can get them go with the Zf S5-47. MAF conversion if it isnt already ditch the stock cats and go with a high flow model. Electric fan, a good cam and 1.7 rockers and the "6 litre tune up"
Your '93 5.0L will make some decent power with a few mods. Ditching the factory y-pipe and converters is a great first step. Stock E7 heads are not the best flowing heads in the world as they come from the factory. GT40s, while good factory heads, are decent upgrades but E7s can be made to flow better than a factory GT40. Check out a company called Thumper. It's a very good product to bump your HP/Torque without breaking the bank.
Your truck intake is one of the best on the market for the money. I would not waste any money on an aftermarket or Mustang intake in the power level you are looking for. The factory roller cam is actually a good piece too.

actuly i would go with a t-5 fox body 5 speed, the throw is shorter and the gears are closer you would have to fab up a new mount for the shifter but its worth it, ture duel 3 in exaughst would be good if your going with long tubes, i would get a mild cam nothing to crazy and i would get a pair of heads off of a 5.0 high out put port and polish them good luck on your build oh yeah ny the way we love pictures lol
Wow! Thanks for all of the input I was leaning towards the E303 cam and some GT40 heads but wasn't sure about the intake. I really think the biggest challenge is going to find a ZF transmission and the install.
The stock truck cam has to go or you'll never see your goals.. it's way too small, but the motor is already a roller so swap in the HO cam with 1.7 rockers.
it would be cheaper for you to find a wrecked truck or a truck thzt has no title for scrap price and buy it so that you would have EVERYTHING you need to change it to a 5 speed and know exactly how it goes in extra then scrap the rest and make your money back

Anyone else want to chime in?

I don't think a ZF tranny would really go with you desired set up. A T5, as mentioned, would be more ideal. 3.90's or 4.10's in the back would be helpful if speed is your thing.
That being said, I don't know how readily a T5 will go in your truck, it has been done, though. Have you considered keeping the AOD?

I'm a manual transmission kinda guy so the auto needs to go. I'm not really into speed like I used to be so the 3.90 and 4.10's don't interest me a whole lot plus I like the better fuel mileage.
So what I'm hearing is:
ZF or T5
GT40 or E7 heads that are ported and polished
Better cam (E303 possibly?)
Electric fan
Keep the truck intake
1.7 rockers
exactly im not sure what kind of heads came on a 5.0 HO but those are pretty good, another thing would be maybe a econo cam (Economy cam) those are pretty good to dont hurt the wallet and dont hurt the horses
