I'm looking for more load capacity and there was a set of leafs from a 250 on craigslist for 100 bucks. I tow a boat trailer and have all the equipment in the bed and would like to not have it sag as much.
Unless you change the rear axle as well, you will not gain any actual capacity. Stiffer springs will not compress as much and keep the truck more level, but that is NOT adding capacity. It is only serving to keep the rear end sag down, of course at the expense of the unloaded ride.
No sense installing 6000 lb capacity springs on a 3800 lb capacity axle as there is zero net capacity gain - over 3800 lb springs on that 3800 lb axle! In fact, if the 6000 lb springs weigh more, then you are REDUCING the net capacity.
Do you have a "leveling kit" installed? If so, that is the first thing to remove if you are actually using your truck as a truck. The rake that is built into a stock truck is to keep the frame slope proper, which has a direct (and negative handling) effect on the front suspension.
Beyond that, it would be better IMO to add rear air bags to try and level the truck as it will drive better, AFTER of course you make sure that your truck as you load it is not exceeding the rear GAWR. The air bags will definatly give you a better ride unloaded over very stiff springs.
Getting the whole rear suspension off a 250 shouldnt be that exspensive around here i see rear axles for 400 bucks and im sure you can find some one parting
