Help I have a 69 F-250 with a 360 and C-6 with single stock exhaust well until about a half an hour ago I went to start it up and then the loudest bang i have ever heard i got out and investigated ( followed the smoke ) and found the muffler totaly destroyed it looks like it was shot with a 12 gauge does anyone have any idias about what could have caused this? any help would be realy apriciated thanks guys i know you all have much more knowledge than me
How do you normally start your truck? Do you pump the gas before starting? If so how many pumps? You definately had a lot of fuel built up to explode it like that. I did the same thing to a camero once.
I'll give your problem a try.
Don't go jumping to the conclusion that you have a valve train problem unless you hear all kinds of clacking and rattling. Your muffler blew because raw gasoline got into it, fire came down the tube, and poof! The problem is intermittent ignition, air getting into the exhaust stream, a rich mixture or a combination of the above. And remember that you will start up with fuel in the exhaust pipe no matter what because the cylinder temperature is not high enough to vaporize the gasoline.
I would start up with a good tuneup paying particular attention to plug wires and anything that might be loose in the primary path. Replace the muffler, tighten up everything in the exhaust chain and write it off as one of those things.
Maybe we can get the graybeards in here to add.
Well I just rebuilt the carb and checked every thing else I havent replaced the muffler yet but it does run somewhat better but I still have a noise coming from the right valve cover maybe a broken valve spring or a lifter not pumping up? I just dont know and can anyone tell me will it hurt anything to drive without a muffler as this is my daily driver? thanks

It probly wont explode any more.
Is it louder than heck now?
Once you get the muffler fixed, it'll be easier to tell if something is wrong with the engine.
If you've got pipes on after the headers/manifolds you should be good for a little bit, but probably not the best idea to run without mufflers too long.
what was the condition of the muffler before it blew up? was it shiny and just fine and dandy? or was it covered in rust with some rotholes starting to brew in it, just waiting to blow? if its not a glasspack then it does have to handle a little pressure, and then like everyone is saying you may have a engine problem, but i would have to imagine for it to be running badly enough to destroy a muffler then you would notice a difference in performance, or mpg, or you would get smoke out the tailpipes....
either way, youve got some work to do and troubleshooting to do, but please dont go crazy throwing parts and money at it without properly diagnosing it first. i have made that mistake....time and patience is what it takes
Ok well i have now confirmed i have a leak at the exhaust manifold to the head found another to have milled as mine is to far gone and found a vacume leak at the carb base
My dad had the same problem when he owned mine, only it happened to him when he was downshifting going down the road. It was explained to him that it was caused by a build up of back pressure and a clogged exhaust system. So he put duels on it.
You didn't hear this from me. But I, I mean other people used to turn the key off heading down the road and turn it back on with very similar results. I heard of this being done in an old c30 wrecker with a 454 and saw, i mean I heard that it sent both mufflers off opposite sides of the road. All this was on closed courses of course. Not on a public road because some one may have irritated you.
Ooo i did this when i was in the service about 25 years ago stationed at San Diego. Had a Dart Swinger and i turned the key off going down Pacific Coast Highway about 70. Explosion so loud i almost crapped my pants. Luckily no black and whites were around but i scared myself pretty good. Underneath the muffler looked like someone opened it with a can opener, sounded mean as hell but the ole slant six got worse mileage after that. On the ship we had a backup diesel generator that backfired and even made the CO jump haha.
