Turn signals only work when...help

So my 00 Exucrsion with the 7.3 and 180K on the clock has an issue. The turn signals only work when the steering wheel is tilted all the way up. I've googled...searched... and don't see anyone else with the same problem. Any idea? I've taken the lower shell of the steering column off and don't see any pinched wires or stressed wires when you tilt the wheel...

I've tried jiggling wires while the wheel is down to see if it will blink but no luck anywhere. any ideas? This seems like a simple problem, but its got me by the curly's so please.... help

Remove the top shell of the steering column also to see if there is a bare wire exposed. You'll need to remove the lock cylinder to the ignition.

X2.

I have read that the wire runs across the top of the column and gets rubbed raw.

I believe there is a "trick" to removing the lock. You may want to search for that first. It might save you some frustration.

Maybe this is the same problem I just experienced on my 05 for the 2nd time in 3 weeks today. The blinkers and flashers occasionally just fail to flash and then they start working again. Could I also have an intermittent short in the column area?

Whoever was the previous owner for some reason had the column apart and pulled the wires straight out of the harness connector. Tried to fix, but ended up having the wires superglued into place, which didnt work and then the harness connector and multi-function switch were superglued together. Ended up with a new harness from ford for only 22 bucks and a new multi function switch for 80. a few hours altogether, some cursing, burns from dripping solder and its good as new.

I did look for the wire on top to be chaffed, but it wasn't a problem at all for mine.
Good luck to anyone else with wiring problems. And if you're worried about the ignition, don't be its super easy. Put key in, turn to on (but not running) and put small allen key or punch into hole on bottom of column and wiggle ignition out. Re-insertion is pretty much the same, but you dont have to put anything in any holes, just line up the ball bearing and push it in, then cycle back and forth and make sure its locked back into place.
