Have a 2003 F350 with the 6.0. Been driving good, maybe an injector going bad, but today went to start it, it sputtered and died. Now it does not start at all. Ran down the batteries trying to get it to start, got them charged, it turns over like nothing wrong, but still nothing. Can anyone tell me a little about the IPR, how it works, signs that it has gone out, etc. Also read that there are screens on the injectors that sometimes will get clogged. Just seems strange it happened all of a sudden. Thanks!
Welcome to FTE. First, problems like this are best suited for the engine specific section. If you scroll further down the main forum listing you'll find the 03-07 6.0 diesel section. Spend some time there and you'll soon understand more about these engines than you ever thought possible. Second I would suggest you start a thread down there with a more appropriate title like sputtered and died or won't start. Often times people will read the title of the thread and might pass over it if they think it's something someone else will answer.
Now to answer your questions, the IPR is the Injection Pressure Regulator which is a control valve that closes off the return path for excess engine oil and diverts more of it to the oil rails in the head which are used to fire the HEUI fuel injectors. The way to diagnose IPR issues is with a scanner than can monitor ICP psi while cranking as well as IPR duty %.
The 6.0 guys may have suggestions as to what other items to check if you don't have a scanner capable of reading these items (the free scans from the parts stores won't work on your truck). Otherwise you might be forced to pay an independent diesel shop to read the codes for you and see if they can give you a clue.
Your engine oil is full, right? Fuel in the tank? Good luck.
