where can i go to get good porting info on small block heads. 1979 351w. i've got one exhaust port 1/2 done and it took forever, lots of scrap metall in there. i can't get to the info on the ford muscle site because i don't suscribe
that helps me a bit but i'd like to know for one thing, when you look down the exaust port from the valve side can i grind the port straight at the floor roughly where the guide boss comes outta the head. one end is lower than the other and if i grind the floor flat i'm worried about hitting a coolant passage between the intake and exhaust valve. also in the combustion chamber can i grind the ridge off that defines the combustion chamber area. i want to get rid of all the sharp edges because i'll be running at least 10 to 1 with these 69 cc 78 351 heads
and i don't want any detonation
i think i'll just buy some new heads and not push my patience to the edge
I've ported several sets of 385 heads, 60-80 hours a set, and got tired of it. After the first set or two the pleasure of accomplishment is overshadowed by iron dust and nasty work.
To do a set right after they're ported, with new studs, new guides, SS valves, aftermarket springs to match a cam, retainers, locks and seals, you're pushing the cost of a new set of dressed aftermarket aluminum heads that right out of the box flow the same as ported heads. I went with aluminum for my current engine.
