So i posted a topic the other day saying my power steering was starting to whine. Now it is really loud and grinding like sounds are coming from the pump. It definately sounds like it is coming from the power steering pump itself area and not the gear box. I put power steering fluid in it thursday becauuse it was whining. I did not know it needed ATF fluid. Usually i am on top of these things but that night i guess it was just my time to be an idiot. I KNOW I KNOW I drove it home on friday and changed out the fluid as best as i could. ANyways the sound comes and goes. It will crank up fine and within minutes its louder than my exhaust.(not literally but you get the point. WOuld this be the pump making this noise? If so do i need a new one or what can i do? THanks for the input guys.
P.S. Ive owned 4 fords and every single one has had power steering issues.
have you tested to make suer its not a bearing noise comnig from the pump
try taking teh drive belt off and spinning the pump by hand.. and feel if the bearings feel bad.
No i have not checked that. I definately will. I will be going back to my hometown friday. Ileft the truck there over the weekend until i can have ime toi fix it. I will check that then. thanks.
Well i FLushed out the ps system today and yes put good ATF in it. THe power steering sounds great now. Coincidentally i guess one of the whining sounds was coming from my ball joints on the left wheel. SO i will have to get that fixed this week sometime.
