Hi i have an 81 f350 4spd 4x4 with an inline 6 I have been having problems getting it started i replaced a solenoid awhile ago and then the key and tumbler set and new ignition switch and it worked fine for a lil while then it acts like the battery is dead but its not and when you turn the key it does nothing so i got a new solenoid a few days ago and started and worked great but today it did it again any ideas thanks and when u jump the solenoid and the key is in the on position it starts
You assume that when you buy a new part, it should work and give good service. This is not always the case. You have probably purchased both solenoid from the same parts store. I believe you have gotten a couple of defective solenoids. If you can jump the solenoid and the engine starts, then the problem is the solenoid. I once went through 4 headlight switches before getting a good one. The QC/QA on these small inexpensive parts is not the best in the world. I would get a new solenoid from a different manufacturer.
When it won't start, get someone to spring the ignition switch over to start while you check for voltage at point #5 in the diagram above. If you do not have voltage on point #5, you might have a neutral safety switch problem if you have a automatic.
You can take a small wire and jump #3 to #5 and see if it will crank. MAKE SURE THE TRUCK IS IN NEUTRAL OR PARK WHEN DOING THIS OR IT MIGHT RUN YOU OVER.
