Friend's truck?

my friend's 2000 F250 V10 ain't got any beans!

He drove it over this evening, and I put my 'Micky Mouse' OBDII scanner on it...and no codes either(at least according to my $100 scanner). Runs ok excepting the no go issue. Top speed about 50-60mph wide open.

Mechanicaly feels fine. Trans shifts...engine purrs...it goes...but poor acceleration...just lethargic. I'm suspecting a bad load of petrol...fuel filter plugged.....getting worse.

However...it does have an exhaust whistle?....But only heard it for a bit...like the exhaust was blocked/catalytic con. jacked...didn't repeat the whistle during later driving....although this was one of the symptoms the friend expounded on.

Not all that sharp on the more modern Ford offerings...but this truck has....in my opinion...either a load of bad gas/plugged fuel filter/bogus fuel pump/fuel issue's of some sort.....or a ecm/electrical issue...that don't read on a common OBDII hand-held. Just may have a plugged up exhaust...but I don't think so(despite the acceleration whistle).....something stupid wrong.

Any wisdom or advice on diagnosing the pals rather large engined F250?

Thanx, Seventeen.

Hmmmm...Truck doesn't show check engine light.

Friend had driven it a couple hundred miles to a stock show...left it set a couple days...then drove it home. Ran good to the show....poor coming back. He did refuel, and he has NOT changed the fuel filter.

The plan: change fuel filter...if no better, drop the exhaust to see if it picks up power. If still no good...get the dealer to scan it(local dealer ain't much account).

Any further ideas or revisions for the 'plan'?

Thanx, Seventeen

If the things you mention don't help, you might check the fuel pressure. Could be the fuel pump is on its way out.

Good luck and let us know what you find!

Check fuel pressure. Could be fuel filter or fuel pump.

Also, what about the exhaust? A clogged catalytic converter would cause a loss of power, especially at speed.

Exhaust?....Well...the friend's son in law is a 'good-wrench'(I'm a JD tech). The 'good-wrench' was thinking the exhaust system might be the issue on account of the whistle.

I heard the whistling myself...but it quit after just a bit of flogging the truck(trying to get it up over 40mph!).

I bonked around on the exhaust/catalytic converter/muffler with a hammer...and seems ok. Don't think the converter came apart or anything...no rattles...don't seem to be any loose stuff in the muffler or converter(which means squat, I know)

Not for sure what the whistle is/was. I think it's on the fuel side myself, filter or pump.

Just what should the fuel pressure be on a 2000 V10?

I understand these have a vacum fuel pressure regulator inline somewhere....but where? The 'good-wrench and myself looked....didn't see.

Did some forum search in the forums, and see that the MAF sensor could be dirty..causing issues. However..truck runs good other than having four-cylinder power!

Disconnect the exhaust at the Y-pipe and take the truck for a quick spin to pinpoint or eliminate an exhaust restriction.

IIRC, fuel pressure at the rail should be around 60 lbs, but I could be wrong on that.

OBD II scanner doesn't read my 99 Ford even the plug fits.
With low power it might be several things. Only few of them would not trigger CEL, like mentioned above, or fouling cylinder. Is the engine idling OK?

Fuel pressure at the injector rail should be roughly in the range of 30 to 45 psi. It needs to be checked both at idle and under heavy load. It should actually increase slightly under load from idle value. If it falls off significantly under load, there is a fuel delivery problem. Weak fuel pump, clogged filter or lines, etc. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanx for the info..I'll pass it on.

They were supposed to change the fuel filter today...but I've not heard any feed-back on the issue yet.

Definately check the Cat Conv. I had a sorry to say Dodge with a V-8 and the cat clogged. Couldn't get it over 45 MPH on highway and over 35 up hill. No check engine light, no exhaust whistle. Ran good at idle so I knew there was no fuel issues. Disconnected the Y-pipe and ran like a top, bought a cheap performance cat from Magnaflow and the neighbor welded it up. Ran great till i got rid of it.

I agree with most posters here, Check that cat. I had a OLD Chrysler lebaron that the cat completely melted together and plugged up. Wouldn't go more than 45, and when i pulled over to look under the hood, the 4cyl exhaust manifold was glowing RED!!! ouch!.... Banged out the cat, and all was good again.
