Finally got started

Well the engine is out and only one thing go broke. Not to bad I guess. Yes the torque convertor nuts were a real pain to get out. I guess we are learning as we go, but with all the help I have gotten from everyone here I will make it work. Its hard to believe all of this for a blown EGR cooler. It has made me decide to keep the truck and do most every upgrade I can.

The top of the motor is off now. Will take the injectors in to be tested tomorrow and the intake and intercooler to be tanked.

Good time to take the heads to a machine shop and have them surfaced. The straight edge method of checking is useless, the heads can bend and twist but still check out OK when measured. Surfacing is the best method.

I have 58000 on my truck. I am doing ARP studs. Do you think they should be surfaced?

Then that answers that. I will have them off this afternoon and get them to the machine shop. Thanks for the help and advice.

When you are into it this far, don't take any short cuts! You don't want to get good at this by doing it more than once.

the converter nuts can be got to from the front of the engine if the front end is off.
you need a 36" extension just go right above the motor mount and in to the access hole in the side of the block.

Thanks for the help guys. Ok todays update. Heads are off. I am posting a picture of the head. We are thinking a bit of water got onto the exhaust valves. This is the only cylinder that looks like this. Had a few of the glow plugs that looked like they were deteriorating of some build up on them. The injectors go in to be tested in the morning as they close early. Should I be replacing just the few glow plugs that were bad looking or all of them? I have had a few times a code that said something about glow plug circuits 4 and also 8. He did say the two bad looking glow plugs came out of the same side. The intercooler got dropped off to be tanked and tested. It had a bunch of oily looking gunk on the bottom drivers side corner. Dropped the intake off to be tanked also.
